Bones Skatepark (Stockport)

Reviewed by Duncan

Alongside the skate shop, games, and the food outlet, Bones consists of 3 rooms; Overall, it's a friendly park with a good atmosphere between all users. I never see it busy these days, but that may be because I go after work, instead of the weekends. Those who like a lot of air may be put off slightly by the low rafters, but the planning seems to work. You can't hit them no matter how hard you try.

It's not the best park for the street skaters, but if you love transitions, you have to try this park.

Beginners Room

This in a small section of the park which is fenced off for those learning the basics of riding the banks and transitions. At one end, there's a small (70cm high?) transition and flatbank. The opposite end is the same, but slightly bigger (130cm?). Between them are a tiny pyramid and camel-hump.

This is a popular sction of the park, but never seems to get busy. There's usually a couple of skaters or boarders in there, just getting a feel for it.

Transitions Room (upstairs)

The rendered image gives a good idea of what to expect in this section. One thing you should note however, is that the ramps are built into the full wooden floor so they are just too smooth.

Anyone who hasn't visited for a while may notice a few changes here. Gone is the rail from the box, and this has been replaced by a planter up against the wall. The spine is now long enough to actually use right, and you can get some good lines using it now. Unfortunately there is very little that could be called a 'street' section which may disappoint some skaters, but the quality of the ramps does go some way to make up for this.

The Ramp Room (downstairs)

On the lower level is where you'll usually find me. This is where the separate ramps are. This includes:
  • 11' Vert - Wide, smooth and fast. Great for getting into the rafters
  • 6' Mini - Just as wide and smooth as the vert, but very mellow, so it's not the fastest ride around.
  • 3'/8' Figure-8 Bowl - The UK's first indoor wooden bowl impresses with it's dual-level setup which gives infinite variations to try.
  • Driveway - contains the park's only rail, along with flat-banks, stairs, planters etc. A haven for the boarders.
  • Vert wall/Jump box - an 8' quarter sets you up for the 15' vert wall. Survive that and you'll be coming back over the 6' jump box that'll kick you high.
